While most poles and powerlines are owned by EATT, in some situations, a property owner or occupier may be responsible for the power equipment on their property. This may include poles, overhead or underground powerlines, connections and other fixtures.
Am I responsible for any powerlines and power poles on my property?
It is likely that you are responsible for the powerlines and power poles on your property if:
- your power is supplied from wires supported by one or more poles located inside the boundary of your property, or
- your meter box is attached to a pole
Rural customers on large properties are more likely to own powerlines and power poles. EATT can advise if you are responsible for any power poles and powerlines on your property, and provide information on how to ensure the safe and ongoing maintenance of these assets.
What do I need to do?
If you are responsible for any powerlines on your property, you must ensure the powerlines, poles and attachments are regularly inspected and maintained.
You should employ a licensed electrical contractor to regularly inspect the powerlines and other equipment for any issues, including:
- Deteriorated poles or powerlines
- Termite damage
- Clearances from the ground and any buildings, pools or other structures
- Trees and other vegetation that are too close
Trees and branches growing too close to powerlines should always be trimmed by a qualified arborist/pruner.
